The NTEU NSW Division is proud to support the March for Humanity organised by the Palestine Action Group, taking place Sunday 3 August, calling for urgent global action to end the ongoing starvation and devastation in Gaza.
The march – that aims to cross the Sydney Harbour Bridge – seeks to draw attention to the deliberate starvation of over 2 million Gazans, and to call on governments, including our own, to take a stand against what many, including UN experts, are identifying as genocide.
NTEU NSW will be there on Sunday. We encourage members to join us – wear purple and look for the purple NTEU flags.
We also join with dozens of other unions and civil society organisations in defending the right to protest. NSW Division Secretary, Vince Caughley, has co-signed a letter to NSW Premier Chris Minns, urging the government to facilitate – not suppress – this peaceful public assembly. The right to protest is a core democratic freedom and must be upheld, not undermined.
As the letter states:
“Seeking to shut down this rally would be a serious departure from the NSW State and Police’s responsibility to uphold the democratic right of protest. We urge your government to facilitate the exercise of democratic freedoms in collaboration with community groups and support the holding of this protest.”
The Harbour Bridge has previously been closed for community events including the Walk for Reconciliation and World Pride. It must also be available to people standing up for humanity and peace.
Join us in standing up for Gaza, and standing up for our democratic rights.
