The higher education sector in NSW is in crisis. Staff are being treated as costs to be cut. Students are losing courses, services and learning conditions. Managements are spending billions on consultants and making decisions behind closed doors, all while basic governance information is being withheld, delayed, or redacted.
The NSW Parliamentary Inquiry into the University Sector and a recent ICAC investigation placed the University of Wollongong at the epi-centre of this crisis, uncovering mounds of deeply concerning evidence. As we await the release of the NSW inquiry’s final report, staff, students and the local community are looking to delve deeper into what steps should be taken next to bring greater transparency and accountability to our public unis.
