ABOUT UON BRANCH
Led by members.
Built for action.
We’re the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) – University of Newcastle Branch: the collective voice of university staff across every corner of our campuses, from Callaghan to Ourimbah, Newcastle City, and beyond.
Our members include academic, professional, technical, and casual staff—people who keep teaching, research, and student life running every day. We’re part of the broader NTEU NSW Division and national union, but our focus here is local: standing up for secure jobs, fair workloads, safe workplaces, and a university that puts education and community before corporate priorities.
Why you should be in the NTEU
At Newcastle, we’ve seen how decisions made behind closed doors can affect the livelihoods of hundreds of staff. Whether it’s restructures, job cuts, casual exploitation, or excessive workloads when we act together, we make a difference.
Being in the union means you’re not on your own. It means having support when things go wrong, and power when we act collectively. Together, we’ve won better pay, protected conditions, stopped unfair restructures, and forced transparency on management when it matters most.
We’re also building something positive: a university that reflects Newcastle’s values: community, fairness, and a bit of grit. Our city’s history is built on solidarity, and our branch continues that proud tradition in the higher education sector.
We’re organising better workplaces
- Secure, ongoing jobs for all staff
- Real workload relief, not endless “efficiency” drives
- Fair pay that keeps up with the cost of living
- Safe, respectful workplaces free from bullying and overwork
- A voice for staff in every decision that affects our work
We’re not just here to say no to bad management decisions. We’re here to say yes to a better university.
