Public hearings began today\u00a0for the\u00a0NSW\u00a0Independent Commission Against Corruption\u2019s\u00a0(ICAC)\u00a0investigation into allegations concerning the University of Wollongong\u00a0(UOW).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The hearing heard the opening statement of\u00a0Counsel Assisting\u00a0the Commission Emma Bathurst,\u00a0in\u00a0which\u00a0a number of\u00a0items were raised\u00a0around\u00a0governance at UOW<\/span>, including allegations around\u00a0intentionally subverting recruitment\u00a0processes; potential undeclared conflicts of interest; undue influence and the engagement of consultants; and potential breaches of university policies and procedures.\u00a0<\/span>The\u00a0Commission will\u00a0establish,\u00a0over the course of the hearings,\u00a0whether actions taken by\u00a0university\u00a0executives\u00a0have\u00a0constituted corruption.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The allegations come after years of turmoil at the university. The\u00a0<\/span>UOW Transformation\u00a0<\/span><\/i>program\u00a0has seen\u00a0more than 200\u00a0job losses and\u00a0numerous\u00a0course cuts.\u00a0The timeline of the\u00a0allegations\u00a0made during today\u2019s ICAC hearing\u00a0overlaps\u00a0significantly with these job losses. They\u00a0raise\u00a0serious questions\u00a0about the validity of the\u00a0<\/span>Transformation\u00a0<\/span><\/i>program\u00a0and the governance structures under which it\u00a0has been rolled out. The National Tertiary Education Union has consistently called\u00a0out\u00a0severe governance failures at UOW and the\u00a0dire\u00a0impact on staff\u00a0and students.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While\u00a0ICAC\u00a0public hearings continue, so too does the\u00a0<\/span>Transformation\u00a0<\/span><\/i>program<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/i>with at least a\u00a0further 20 staff potentially being made redundant in\u00a0IT and Marketing and Communications in the coming weeks.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The National Tertiary Education Union\u00a0has today called for\u00a0UOW to\u00a0halt\u00a0all plans to\u00a0cut jobs\u00a0under the\u00a0<\/span>Transformation\u00a0<\/span><\/i>program.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI work with so many hardworking and honest\u00a0academic and professional staff\u00a0at Wollongong.\u00a0All we want is for the\u00a0people in charge of our universities\u00a0to\u00a0be putting staff, students, and\u00a0the public\u00a0interest first.\u00a0While we await findings,\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0calling for the\u00a0university to halt the catastrophic\u00a0job loss processes that\u00a0are\u00a0still\u00a0underway.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span>\u201cToday\u2019s hearing has put serious allegations about governance at the University of Wollongong into the public domain. The Commission\u2019s hearings will examine those matters in detail, and we await its findings.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBut for staff who have lived through years of restructures, job losses and course cuts, these questions are not abstract. They go to whether decisions affecting people\u2019s jobs and the future of the university were made properly, transparently and in the public interest.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
