BARGAINING
AT UON
It’s time to bargain for better workplaces and a better university.
Being an NTEU member means standing together with our colleagues to protect and extend our working conditions at the University of Newcastle (UoN). One of the ways we do this is by campaigning for improvements during Enterprise Bargaining negotiations.Â
In 2025 NTEU members successfully pushed back against UoN management’s proposal to defer our right to bargain. In April 2025, NTEU reps commenced bargaining for new Enterprise Agreements (EA).
During bargaining we can increase pressure on management and transform this fight for job security into demands for an even stronger Enterprise Agreement. Â
We should feel empowered to raise our voices for basic assurances, but it’s going to take all our voices to ensure we get the change we want to see.
It’s more important than ever to join the NTEU! If you’re already a member, you can sign up now to be active in our branch work using the form.

NTEU MEMBERS ARE GOING ON STRIKE
Thursday 23rd October
NTEU members will be taking a half-day strike on Thursday, 23 October from 1:00pm. This looks like going to work as normal in the morning, then collectively we’ll walk off the job at lunch and come together for a rally around 1.15pm at V-lawn building, Callaghan.
We need every single member who voted YES in our PAB to come out and strike together. This is an opportunity to channel our frustration into action. The more people turn up, the closer we get to reaching agreement that will mean real improvements to our working lives. Please pledge to strike here.Â
What can you do this week?
1. To talk to your colleagues about striking, encouraging all members to pledge to strike and be at the rally;
2. Tell us and your colleagues why you are striking by printing out the template and posting a photo
3. Put up posters and hand out flyers to promote the strike;
We need as many of your colleagues to join us so we can maximise our impact!
You can find campaign materials like flyers, posters and a Zoom background via nteu.info/uon-materials

For our non-member colleagues, make sure you join the NTEU to contribute to a strong bargaining campaign. Because the more voices we have, the better our chance of winning improvements to our workplaces, which leads to better institutions, better lives for workers and better outcomes for students!
